Eurostat reported that 4.38 million people displaced from Ukraine were under temporary protection in EU countries at the end of May 2026. The monthly release measures people with an active status on the reference date rather than people who arrived during that month.
Germany, Poland and Czechia recorded the largest absolute numbers. Comparing countries by total alone does not show the pressure on housing, schools or local services, which varies with population and regional capacity.
Why the status matters
Temporary protection is a separate legal arrangement from an individual asylum application. It gives a defined group a residence and protection status while the EU response to the war in Ukraine continues.
People's rights and access to services can still depend on national registration, local rules and the documents they hold. Official national guidance remains the best source for an individual's next step.
