A Reddit discussion said foreign nationals are leaving Switzerland because of living costs and a difficult labour market. The country’s official figures do confirm a rise in departures, but they do not support a single explanation for why every person left.
The Swiss State Secretariat for Migration reported that 82,659 people in the permanent foreign resident population left Switzerland in 2025, around 5 percent more than in 2024. It also reported 165,386 arrivals and positive net migration of 74,675 people. Most new arrivals came for employment and 73.1 percent were from EU or EFTA countries.
What the figures cannot answer
Housing costs, work, family, study, retirement and a return home can all influence a decision to leave. The aggregate release does not assign a reason to each departure, so claims about a single cause should be treated carefully.
