Moving country can change which health system covers you. The EU’s Your Europe service says the responsible system normally depends on your economic status and place of residence, not nationality alone.
Start by identifying whether you are moving as an employee, self employed person, student, jobseeker, pensioner or dependent family member. The answer may affect what proof is needed and which authority should register you.
A practical first week list
Rules can differ by country and personal circumstances. Use the official links below before making a decision, especially if you have ongoing treatment, are pregnant, have children or work in more than one country.
- Keep your health insurance record, identity documents and work or study evidence together.
- Ask the relevant insurer or National Contact Point which country is responsible for your cover.
- If you have an S1 form, register it with the health institution in the country where you live.
- Check how to register with a local doctor or health centre and what appointment rules apply.
- Do not assume an EHIC provides long term cover after a permanent move.
