The European Commission has proposed extending temporary protection for people displaced from Ukraine until 4 March 2028. The current framework is due to run until March 2027, and the proposal is intended to give governments and displaced people more certainty while the war continues.
Temporary protection is a collective emergency framework. It is different from an individual asylum decision and it does not replace the national documents people may need to live, work, study or access services.
What is confirmed
The Commission published its proposal on 26 June. It describes continued large scale displacement and the practical need to avoid abrupt uncertainty for people who have built lives in EU countries under the protection framework.
The proposal would extend the date. It does not mean every national administrative rule is identical, and it does not automatically resolve individual questions about travel, family members or a later move between countries.
What to watch
The next legal step is an EU level decision. National authorities will then communicate how local registration, renewal and support arrangements work in practice.
