The European Migration Network has published its Asylum and Migration Overview for 2025. It records 180,211 irregular border crossings at the EU’s external borders, 25 percent fewer than in 2024.
That is an EU wide measure. It does not show that every route, city or nationality experienced the same change, and it should not be used to draw conclusions about an individual asylum or residence case.
Why the national picture still matters
The overview says the share of third-country nationals in the population varied substantially among EMN countries. It also tracks legal, policy and operational changes across 2025.
The network draws on 30 national contact points and EU-level sources. Readers should use the original national authority data when a question concerns a specific country, permit or local service.
