The European Commission has opened a 10 million euro funding action focused on better protection for migrant workers and action against illegal employment. The deadline for member state applications is 28 August.
This is not a direct grant for individuals. It is a call for national projects and systems that can improve monitoring, enforcement and support in sectors where workers may be at greater risk of abuse.
Why the issue matters
The Commission’s implementation reports describe targeted inspections in high risk sectors and say that prevention, detection and worker protection need to work together. Illegal employment can harm workers and also undermine employers who follow the rules.
Immigration status can make it harder for people to report abuse. A worker who faces withheld pay, unsafe conditions or coercion should seek confidential advice from an authorised local service before relying on informal claims online.
What this does not change
The funding call does not create a new residence status, work permit or automatic entitlement for an individual worker. Employment and immigration rights remain governed by national and EU rules that apply to the person’s circumstances.
The confirmed evening development is a funding deadline for member states and a continued EU policy focus on enforcement and protection.
