The European Commission said on 6 August that the Entry/Exit System had registered more than 150 million entries and exits since becoming fully operational at external Schengen border crossing points in April.
The system is intended to help border officers identify repeat attempts under different identities and to keep a consistent record of entry and exit dates. It is a border-management tool, not an asylum decision-making system.
Who is covered
The system applies to non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay in the Schengen area. It records travel-document information, fingerprints, a facial image and entry and exit events. EU nationals and nationals of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland are not registered.
People should check the official travel guidance for their own nationality and visa status before travelling. The system does not replace the right to request international protection at the border.
