Belgium’s Commissioner General for Refugees and Stateless Persons published July figures showing 2,019 applicants for international protection. Afghanistan, Palestine and Eritrea were among the leading countries of origin in the monthly list.

The office said it took 2,495 decisions concerning 3,109 people and reported a protection rate of 22.7 percent. Those figures describe the authority’s published workload and decisions, not a promise for any individual applicant.

Reading the number carefully

The same release said the total workload was 27,163 cases at the end of July, with an estimated backlog of 20,663. Definitions, dates and the difference between applications, people and decisions matter when comparing monthly reports.
